Not sure what to expect when working with a freelance writer or consultant?
I’m a big fan of knowing what to expect when you sign on to something new. Here’s the step-by-step process for creating and packaging a message that moves the needle.
First, schedule a time to connect via my calendar.
We’ll spend 15 to 30 minutes discussing your needs to see if we’re in alignment. Join our call with some information about your problem areas, deadlines, and desired results.
You don’t need to have all the answers. That’s why you hire me. Still, having a general idea is ideal for being efficient with our time.
I’ll send you a proposal and digital contract outlining specific project information about payments, deadlines, and deliverables
Perfecting your message is much easier when I get to know what your message is, your desired goals and what you’ve already done to get there. That’s where the “clarity form” comes in. Use this form to tell me more about your strengths, feedback, target audience, competitors and more. It’s ok if you don’t know the answer to all of them. We’ll go over it all in our next step.
This is where we’ll connect the dots. You can fill me on things you couldn’t find the words for when doing the form. I can ask you other follow up questions.
Expect lots of questions! But I promise I won’t overwhelm you. I’ll ask about your background, current systems, work style/office culture, things that have worked, and more. The questions will vary based on what we’re working on, but all are designed to get a thorough grasp of your current situation and pinpoint solutions. At this point, we’ll also nail down more specifics about the project.
Research is my jam. I’ll review documents like things you’ve written for yourself or written about you. I’ll also do a deep dive into your industry so I understand what’s really going on in your corner of the world. To get a sense of your customer base and appeal, I may speak to stake holders, former clients or other closely aligned with your business. This all helps with grasping the essence of your business, values and your “voice.”
I’ll share what I’ve been working on and you’ll share what needs to be added or changed, if anything. This applies more to content strategy and writing than it does consulting.
Whether it’s a keynote speech, long form blog post, internal documents, content strategy, or more, I submit the final deliverables that truly connect with your business purpose.
I may ask you to fill out a short survey about your experience working together. Refining my skills and creating a pleasurable experience is my priority. Your feedback can help me achieve that.
